The large amount of damage caused by this fire was primarily due to the long period of time needed to discover its location and the subsequent distance traveled by fire fighting units. The absence of even the most basic, minimal built-in fire protection equipment was also a major contributor. Undoubtedly, this damage would have been far greater if not for the proper size-up by the Chesapeake City's Fire Chief and his recognition of the tremendous exposure problem that existed. He and other fire personnel are to be commended for a job well done.
