Of the sixteen victims who were transported to area hospitals, six were treated
and released, eight were admitted, three to critical care units—including the cardiac victim,
and two were DOA. Autopsy results indicated smoke inhalation as cause of death.
Most of the injuries were related to smoke inhalation, but one resident was admitted for
treatment of a broken leg incurred when he jumped from a third story window.
Forty-eight units were on the fireground when the incident was brought under
control at approximately midnight.
Investigators from the City of Miami Fire Department, Arson Division, established
the area of origin as the office waiting area on the second floor and concluded
that the fire had been deliberately set. A discharged fire extinguisher was found in the
area of origin, however, it was not determined who had used it.
