Three guard stations controlled the primary access points to the complex and
roving security guards patrolled the property. The main guard station was located on the
south side of Stafford Street, across from the Dye House. A second guard station was
located in the parking lot near Broadway Street, in front of the Marriner Building, and
the third was at the north end of the alley between the Process and the Main Buildings.
The main guard station also housed the on-site medical services and radio communications,
as well as the fire alarm annunciator panels. When an alarm was received,
maintenance workers and guards were dispatched by radio to investigate. The guard at
the main station would call the Fire Department to confirm the alarm and provide a status
report from the personnel on scene as soon as additional information was available.
The Fire Department would respond to the main guard station and relied on the
security guards to lead them to the problem area. The Fire Department did not have a
written pre-fire plan for the complex, but did conduct familiarity inspections at the site
from time to time.
Employees were instructed to move toward the main guard station during an
emergency and to seek treatment for injuries at the first aid room. The company had an
evacuation plan, which required supervisors to account for their employees in the event
of an emergency.
