The Methuen Fire Department responded to about forty fire alarms per year at
the Malden Mills complex in recent years. These incidents ranged from dumpster fires
and water flow alarms to a major incident in 1993, when an explosion in the hopper
room of flock line number one seriously burned several workers. No fire ensued from
the explosion and a multi-casualty incident (MCI) command structure was established to
manage patient treatment and transportation. The cause of this explosion was determined
to be a new treatment that made the fibers prone to ignition.
