Corning is located east of Omaha, Nebraska in the southwestern corner of Iowa
and is seventy-one miles west, southwest of Des Moines, the state capital. The city is the
county seat of Adams County and has a population of 2,000. Adams County encompasses
432 square miles and the principle occupation of the county’s 4,800 residents is
agriculture.
The Corning Volunteer Fire Department is one of three volunteer fire departments
in Adams County. There are no paid departments within the County. Corning VFD’s
thirty members provide fire protection within the city limits of Corning and respond to a
rural portion of the county as well. The Department operates one fire station located in
downtown Corning and four pieces of apparatus. Operations personnel are divided into
three teams of firefighters. Each team is lead by a Captain and a Lieutenant who is
responsible for training his or her team. Average response time is three minutes within
the city limits and the Department averages fifteen members per incident, which includes
daytime calls. The Department’s response goal is to be able to respond with at least two
units and eight firefighters on every call.
The Adams County EMS Service, staffed by both volunteer and career members,
provides EMS transport service within the city and the county. The service is based at the
Alegent Health Mercy Hospital in Corning. At least two BLS ambulances are staffed
around the clock whenever it is possible to do so.
