The equipment utilized in the fire has been estimated as follows: Two
response teams with three engines per team; six "type one" strike teams
with five engines per team; four "type three" strike teams with five
engines per team; five to six additional engines supplied by local
governments: 15 hand crews with 15 people each (nine from the California
Department of Corrections and six from the California Youth Authority);
nine hired water tenders; two fixed wing air tankers; one air attack
coordinator aircraft; eight helicopters (one from the California Department
of Forestry and Fire Protection, and seven hired medium and light
helicopters, two of which were used for observation and reconnaissance and
the rest for water carrying); four dozers (two California Department of
Forestry and Fire Protection medium dozers, one hired medium dozer, and one hired heavy dozer); an overhead staff from the California Department of
Forestry and Fire Protection estimated at 26; and other agency overhead
such as municipal chiefs, estimated at eight people. In addition, a fire
information office for contact with the media was staffed with four people
during the day and four at night. Finally, two private felling crews with
two men per crew were utilized for cutting down trees during the fire.
In all, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection
estimated 885 firefighting personnel on the fire. Many of these personnel
were involved in final control and mop-up of the fire and were not involved
in the initial attack or initiaI spread of the fire.
