By this time, three hours after the fire started,
some citizens in the area had begun to leave on their own. Security
personnel from the Pebble Beach Company were also beginning to secure the
area. Spotting (small fires) began above Los Altos Drive and into the
residential area. Apparently some County deputies and police officers were
also arriving in the area although they had not been officially requested
at this point. Pacific Gas and Electric personnel were also in the area.
At approximately 1845, the incident commander requested an agency
representative from the Sheriff's Office to assist with the evacuation of
citizens, and the official evacuation began. This turned out to be about
ten minutes before the fire swept over the ridge into the residential area
being evacuated. Spotting was continuing to occur above Los Altos Drive
into the structures. Although some citizens began evacuation, others
continued to attempt to water down roofs and stay with their homes.
